With its 147 km of coasts for a total of 17.126 meters of sandy beaches, easily reachable from the mainland. During the summer , several ferry boats are available from Piombino port to Portoferraio in only 1 hour.
The story of the Elba Island began at the time when history and legend were strongly weaved. The destiny of the island has always been determined by two different but important factors: the strategic geographical location and the mineral resources . For those factors it has always been an interesting destination for the big powers in the Mediterranean area, to the Etrurian was an important iron mine resource and an important contribute to prosperity of the civilization . The Roman appreciated its natural mud baths and its iron mine, while during the Middle Ages was dominated by the town of Pisa. Ruins of the Pisa domination are still available. It was the great Cosimo de Medici that built his Cosmopoli on the ruins of the ancient roman town Fabricia, the modern Portoferraio, surrounding the heart of the town with important walls saving the inhabitants from the pirates. But the most important historic period for the Elba was during the ten months of exile of the Emperor Napoleone Bonaparte. His stay was a short stay but the great Emperor left an important mark to his tiny kingdom , still appreciable.
